Since 1995, the University of Maryland’s School of Architecture, Planning and Preservation has taught summer interdisciplinary study abroad courses for students in the historic city of Saint Petersburg, Russia. The program offers students a case study of a historic European city and its adaptation to a changing modern society; balancing contemporary urban development with historic preservation and managing the challenges of becoming an emerging market economy. This summer, 16 graduate students from Maryland's Architecture, Urban Planning, Historic Preservation and Real Estate Development programs embarked on a four-week tour of the sites, history and culture of Saint Petersburg. The students then joined Russian architecture students from Saint Petersburg State University's School of Architecture and Civil Engineering to create a joint redevelopment proposal for the city.
