gazes in the underground

gazes in the underground

Afternoon riders on Hong Kong's MTR (underground) at the Admiralty station. Where are they heading and what's on their mind?

This photo was taken for submission to the 85mm Street Contest "Self Portrait". This contest is a fun challenge and gave me a reason to take my camera along on a gloomy winter day.

Getting a decent photo in the underground turned out to be more complicated than I originally envisioned. Challenges include staying out of the way of hurried passengers getting on/off the trains at one of the busiest interchange in the city, limited time when the train doors are opened, the train doors never opened at the exact same spot...and most difficult was getting a reasonable self image (subject of this contest) along with the passengers where there is a story or the allusion of a story....have I achieved a little?

what lies beneath

what lies beneath

This ice cave is directly below Angel Glacier and to the right of Cavell Glacier on Mount Edith Cavell. I'm not sure if this is the bottom of Angel Glacier or a part of Cavell Glacier. The size of this ice cave is more than 8 feet (may be 10 feet) in height and the ice is constantly melting as evident from the water droplets. Many visitors stood closed beneath for photos but this was not without risk. Not soon after I took this pic, the rock above the droplets on the left came smashing down...luckily, no one was beneath it at the time. For more info and direction to this site, please see the pic Miss Edith Cavell (2nd older pic).

Miss Edith Cavell

Miss Edith Cavell

This mountain and glacier in the Jasper National Park is named in honor of the British nurse Edith Cavell who is celebrated for saving the lives of soldiers from all sides without distinction during WWI (en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Edith_Cavell). Access here is via a short walk from the parking lot at the top end of the switch back Cavell Road off Highway 93A. Due to the sharp turns of the switch back, long body vehicles are not permitted.
