September 19th 2008 - Cause It's Only Money

    Explored! #6

I don't think this needs an explanation.

I'm headed to dinner so maybe I'll leave a witty description later... or maybe I won't... it's friday! ;-)

Edit: Back from dinner and just picked up Clarissa from the mall... so I thought I'd finish my post.

Today was a really slow day at work. They let us go at 3:30, so I finally decided to do the shot I'd been wanting to do for a while.

I saw this old pump a while back while out driving and instantly fell in love with the setting. I jumped out of my car and went to the door... no one inside... it looked abandoned except that... there were drink machines inside that were all lit up. Well.. I didn't want to just start snapping away cause there's a pretty busy highway nearby and I was worried that someone would get suspicous. So I marked it on my GPS and decided to try later.

I've been back twice since then without snapping a single photo.

So today I was determined to find someone who knew what was up. So I parked and went to the house next door to ask if they knew the owner. No one was home. Luckily on my way back to the car someone pulled up and said that they used to own the place and that the new owner would have no problem with me being there and told me to tell them I had permission. They said the guy only opened it up in the mornings and very rarely in the afternoons.

So, this pump was kind of cool. I wish I could buy gas at the prices that were still on the dial... $1.62 per gallon.

Afterwards Tam and I had a nice little dinner at Ryan's and were about to finish "There Will Be Blood".

    G' Night!

At least by burning the money you're increasing the dollar's value. ;)

I remember the first time I ever filled up gas in my own car, it was $1.10. Now, I'm paying $4.00 R-I-D-I-C-U-L-O-U-S!

EXCELLENT IMAGE. THE TONES AND THE WORK YOU PUT INTO IT ARE WELL REWARDED.

    24. Stephen Poff (45 months ago | reply)

I'm with you... I think I put gas in my own car for just under $1.00... maybe .98 or something (I remember cause it was a big deal if it ever got to the $1.00 mark around hurricane season). It was pretty cool cause you knew that putting $10 in filled it up exactly. Now I just put $25 in it sometimes and try not to look at where the needle lands... cause I'd just rather not know!

And thanks, the real work was spent at the gas station... the rest kind of fell together in just a few minutes of editing.

Great shot - love the setting... in a fun bit of serendipity - I did a shot involving money (and destroying it) on Friday too! :)

Was this taken on the kit lens? Also what was the ambient light like - was it bright midday light or overcast evening / twilight? Lovely shot and the steely denim tones are great!

    27. Stephen Poff (45 months ago | reply)

@ johnoconnell: No, this was taken with a Tamron 18-200 Zoom lens, it an overcast day at about 5:00pm (sun was just over the tree line behind me and to the right.

      And thanks!
