Back in grade 9 science we had a project/contest to make a crystal. Other kids ended up with much larger, crazy crystals made from other things, but my alum crystal was the most refined. I have a ziploc bag with a couple of them in there, and I'm not sure if they are original from grade 9 or ones that I tried making again later on. Its quite simple to do, just heat up some water, dissolve as much alum (found in the grocery store spice aisle I think) as you can in the water to supersaturate it, then let it cool with something for the crystal to grow on (I believe I used a string).
