Wow, that looks cool! And disgusting, but mostly cool :D

I had one of those on my back for a couple of years - recentl it became infected, swelled right up and was hot (and painful) to touch - my doc put me on a course of a penicillin analogue, something called Erythroped A, and he resumed my prescription for Minocycline (which I was on a couple of years ago because I don't have the best skin anyway).

Anyway, I was on this Erythroped for a few days, and the doc did say this would hapen, but it swelled right up then started to weep - and when I accidentally tore the skin over the head I thought "well, I can't just leave it" - so I gave it the gentlest of squeezes and it ALL came out.

I'm not a squeamish person, but I was disgusted. Fortunately I'd just had a shower, so I had clean skin and hands - but it was HORRIBLE! So much crap inside it... And now I have a sizeable hole where it all came out of, which I've cleaned thoroughly, put a big plaster on top of, and done my best to keep clean - but it was abbsssollluuutteelly horrible.

I've tried taking a few photos of it (of course! haha) but I'm on my own here at the moment, and its position doesn't help trying to get a good shot of it - it's just off-centre, on the top of my back just below the nape of my neck. It's still weeping a bit though, and it's disgusting.

Maybe in hindsight I should've just had the whole thing removed last year... But I never knew it would get as bad as it did before it got better! If I have one again in the future I'll definitely consider proactive removal :D

Did it feel weird when you had yours removed? Was it done under a local or general?

Wow, that's quite a story, Christopher Woods. It does sound like a truly disgusting experience, but I really wish i could have been there to see it. I really deeply longed for something like that to happen with mine (and i did not always give it the most gentle of squeezes i can assure you), but alas it stayed buried under the skin until the doctor dude sliced it out.

As far as the experience itself of having it removed, i believe they did give me a local anesthetic, but it still felt like a considerable amount of "pinching" was taking place during the actual incision. Also, i could feel the blood running down my back which I didn't particularly enjoy, but the site of the cyst after the fact made me feel better.

you should have seen the nurse's face when i asked her to put my cyst in some formaldehyde for me to take home! priceless!

this is gross. I have one on my back, and I've drained it many times. It even got huge and became a crater. now it draines out of a new hole. My question is...after removal, has it reappeared? or is life much better after its gone. should I get the surgery?

    7. mugsniffer (43 months ago | reply)

Yeah get the surgery. Once it's gone, it's gone and it's not coming back. Unless, of course, you're unlucky and lightning strikes twice in the same spot.

OK so I had one of these removed surgically a week ago tomorrow. THe surgeon left it open because of the infection. However, I want to know why the whole doesnt look like its closeing yet. HOw long will it take to close? ANy one?
