These domes at CalEarth lack the finished and applied skin of the newest design, but are tectonically honest, showing the construction method as the skin of the building. However, note the tests being performed on areas of the structure.

thanks am! the sand is important to create thermal mass. That sand soaks up the heat of the sun during the day, and the heat doesn't creep through the shell of the building until the evening.
