Test Run: Buy/Accept (pieces of) Art?
So I'm trying this out as a sort of test run for a future project. Here's the scoop:
At 12:00 A.M. Eastern Time on Tuesday, April 25, you're welcome to start claiming pieces of this painting (just add a comment to indicate which one(s) you want). You can claim one piece, four pieces (to make your own "square") or the whole damn thing--keeping in mind, of course, that the more you take, the less will be available to others. Once you claim a piece, it's yours. You'll have to e-mail me at meganscheminske@gmail.com with your address so I can send it to you. All I ask is that you pay for shipping, which should be about $5 or $6. I'd also love it if you'd post a picture to show me what you end up doing with the piece.
On the other hand, you're welcome to pay anything you'd like for your piece(s), and you can even help me decide how to spend your money. I'm going to start three jars: Jar A is devoted to saving up for a trip to NYC this summer for Sadie and me, so that I can paint in Zach/Paul/Jakob's awesome Universal Space Agency; Jar B is devoted to saving up for a public art project I'll be constructing in Mt. Scott Park in August; Jar C is for donations to Portland Friends of the Dhamma, whose generosity makes it possible for me to continue painting in my own, amazing studio.
Also, you can do lots of fun things with your pieces! Add to them, mix and match them, send one or two to someone else who claimed a different area of the painting...you could even send them back to me and ask me to turn them into a new piece of art! The possibilities are endless!
Remember--it's a-ok to claim a piece without paying more than the shipping cost! Have fun!
Oh! Of course...the painting is oil on canvas, aprox. 36" x 36" (so each "tile" will be around 6" x 6" -- thanks, Zach). I'm not sure if I'll prepare/mount them in any way before sending them off. Probably not. I like the raw canvas feel. The splicing I've done by adding notes is not exact (I wish it were!), so bear with me. Again, this is a test run.

Meg, can you give us an idea of how big each tile is?
Also, is it canvas or board?
PS. I am going to be poised and ready to pounce on one of these tiles -- it will look great at the Space.

nowyou33 (74 months ago | reply)
What a beautiful painting! I can't believe the world will share it. Could I have 7, or 3, or 13, or any combination?
MaryReinard (74 months ago | reply)
a truely respelendent offer.
This is Alistair - I'd love #9 and will send a contribution to Jar B
This is Sakula - I'd love #13 and will send a contribution to Jar A so long as you come back.
And if neither of those is available but there is still a square (or rectangle) left unclaimed we would love whatever you select, and we will share it and contribute to Jars A&B.
And if they are all gone, we shall nevertheless get coffee and login to witness the great diaspora.

MaryReinard (74 months ago | reply)
What no one wants five? That's her right brain!
I would be honored to put it on top of her right face if it remains unclaimed (alistair)
jensnow (74 months ago | reply)
If MaryReinard doesn't take #5, I'd love to buy it. Your paintings are great and this is a fantastic means of distribution.
MaryReinard (74 months ago | reply)
Jensnow - you should have 5, I meant to request it if was unclaimed at the end of this whole event - I already have a piece. (I think)
meg scheminske (74 months ago | reply)
WOW!! I was in my studio, without internet access, while this whole "explosion" was taking place!! What a test run! I will do my very best to distribute the pieces to all of you fairly!
Tous les noms sont déjà pris... pfff... (74 months ago | reply)
Wonderful
jordan gadd (74 months ago | reply)
I'll take number 11 if no one else has claimed it. What a great idea!
meg scheminske (74 months ago | reply)
The results are in! Distribution decisions were made on the basis of first-come-first-served (because that's what I promised). I tried to understand clearly any "wishy washy" claims. If I've mis-calculated, please let me know!

This was a great idea. Love what you made, organized and pulled off. Only sad that I was too slow. Looking forward to the next one....if there is one?

Oh no I saw this too late! No BDay present for me it seems ;)
What a great idea, glad so many people were basically jumping at your art work.
I thought 11, 12 and 16 were the most interesting.

Annie Sugar Packet (54 months ago | reply)
This is such a fabulous idea!!!!! Do you mind if I ask a) how hard it was to cut the work apart? and b) how much you managed to raise for doing so? I think the idea is brilliant and am curious as to its success... This piece is just beautiful...
meg scheminske (54 months ago | reply)
Sassy -- Do you mean technically difficult or emotionally difficult? Either way, it wasn't hard. I didn't raise much -- maybe $150? But raising money wasn't the point. Thanks for the comment.
