The Iconic Brandenburg Gate at Sunset

The Iconic Brandenburg Gate at Sunset

The Brandenburg Gate (German: Brandenburger Tor) is a former city gate and one of the most well-known landmarks of Berlin and Germany. It is located west of the city centre at the junction of Unter den Linden and Ebertstraße, immediately west of the Pariser Platz. It is the only remaining gate of a series through which Berlin was once entered. One block to the north stands the Reichstag building. The gate is the monumental entry to Unter den Linden, the renowned boulevard of linden trees which formerly led directly to the city palace of the Prussian monarchs. It was commissioned by King Frederick William II of Prussia as a sign of peace and built by Carl Gotthard Langhans from 1788 to 1791. Having suffered considerable damage in World War II, the Brandenburg Gate was fully restored from 2000 to 2002 by the Stiftung Denkmalschutz Berlin (Berlin Monument Conservation Foundation). Sunset in Turgutreis

Sunset in Turgutreis

A boat cruising the Adriatic coastline during a glorious sunset in Turgutreis, Turkey.

The town is named after the Ottoman admiral Turgut Reis who was born there in 1485. Known in the West as Dragut, Turgut Reis was famous for his expeditions along the coasts of Spain, France, Italy, and North Africa. His career and life came to a close while attempting to subdue the island of Malta. A few kilometres outside the town center, in Sabanci Park, a waterfront memorial with his statue marks the place where he first set sail.

The Turgutreis coastline consists of several inlets, with steep mountains running parallel to the coast. There are 14 Turkish islands around Turgutreis including Küçük Kiremit, Büyük, Fener, Çatal, Yassý, Tüllüce, Kargý, Köçek, Kadikalesi, and Sarýat, as well as the Greek islands Kos and Kalimnos. The coast and the sea around the islands are littered with wrecks that are the source of artifacts on display at the Bodrum Museum.
