gypsy girls PUSHKAR

young gypsy girls roam the fair grounds all day and night and look for foreigners who would like to click their pictures so that they can ask for money later... they often wear a lot of jewelry and makeup !

i totally love their costume, on my last trip to rajasthan had got a similar dress stiched and this time round i bought tons of tribal jewelry :o) its beutiful, simple, handcrafted from such basic things as beads and seeds :)

very true garima.... they also used to carrry a mobile cover on their waists... (ofcourse without the mobiles).... with badly done make up... and lipsticks..etc... they would look more beautiful in their natural clothes than these..... i hope they didnt ask for money when u clicked them this time..heh

Now this picture could be a topic for a Phd thesis really, with chapters such as Poverty, Begging, Tourism, Gypsies, India, Fashion, Aesthetics, Jewellery, Exploitation, Children, Beauty, Minorities, Women, Cultures and so on. It is a very beautiful, but in the same time very troubling picture (with the caption) I must say.

wmliu, yes, they were astounding... will later post pics of all the tribal jewelry i purchased from these girls!

milap and orhan, all this loud makeup is to lure people, sadly prostituition has become a means of livelihood for many gypsy women today because they are no more nomads, as there are no more many freelands to grow and graze cattle on... they have mostly taken to handicrafts which they sell to tourists and prostitution... i heard someone mention that pushkar has 70% AIDS and most of these are the young boys and girls who travel across india from pushkar with tourists, entertaining them... very sad, but true!
