mushrooms and mistletoe
for the ornament swap: crochet wool mushrooms embroidered and beaded, with a little felted, crochet and beaded alpaca mistletoe on top, with a candy cane striped bamboo blended string. they look a lot clunkier in the photo than in person. why camera? why?

why thank you! and i'm sorry...
you know what i just thought of that would have been cool? if a group had taken up a theme. like snow, or woodland, or candy. that would be great don't you think? then you'd have a real set as interpreted by 10 people. maybe next year!

These are really lovely . I love folkloric or woodland anything, I also like your idea about interpretation of a theme for next year. Have you seen the amazing mushrooms on the rose and radish website ?

thank you margie! maybe we can do a thematic valentines or easter swap so we don't have to wait so long.
i have seen those mushrooms and i think they're super sweet. they're a lot like little birds' mushrooms, but with furry little roots. which begs the question, do mushrooms have roots?

Gah! Lurve the shrooms :)

Mushrooms don't have roots they have a web like collection at their base collectively called a mycelium. This projects into the tree or earth and allows the absorption of nutrients similar to roots in plants. We usually don't see this in the store mushrooms but if you go in the woods in the fall and carefully dig some up rather than pulling you will see this below the volva (name for the cup at the base of the stem) . I would love to take part in a easter swap with a forest or folkloric theme if you want to organize something. Let me know.
