At the edge of light: Aperture 1.4@ISO 1600

Crowd shot. . . no need for forground.
At the edge of light: Aperture 1.4@ISO 1600 by Gespür für Licht.
(best viewed large!)

I don't know how many of you have ever shot film. I did it for nearly 21 years and still do it today. Especialy I pushed ISO100-slide-film well beyond their specification to ISO1600 to achieve some stunning results. With digital we are approaching noise-free ISO6400-modes fast, which will enable us to shoot at the edge of light, take pictures formerly thought im possible to take. Even ISO1600 in my D70 is less noisy that ISO400 in My F5 using very good negative film and the best scanner available.

You know that it is always possible to use a tripod and long exposure on things that do not move. My motifs are mostly people and movement in spontaneous settings, where this does not apply. So I need to control shutter release times. Below a thirtieth of a second, the movement of the subjects rules the amount of motion blur. Even if I can hold an eigth of a second freehand or monopdded, my models will usually move in that time.

I recommend to keep at least one Ultrafast lens in your setup. Go out at night without flashlight and combine aperture 1.4 with ISO1600 or ISO3200 to take pictures never seen before.

Ok, could have been a really good image but obviously the objects in the foreground ruin it slightly...Edit: it actually IS a really nice picture!

@Urban Disturbance: The "Objects in the foreground" are the shoulders of our town major, Mrs. Bärbel Dieckman (left) and of the actor incarnatin the Saint Martin. This shot is taken with my AIS-Nikkor 1.4/35mm and I decided to take the blurry corners and keep them (which I could have easily wiped away with the copy&stamp in Photoshop) to give the picture more depth.

I the remix I see less depth and the feeling of looking from above onto the crowd is also destroyed in my eyes

In my eyes the shot with the two heads (St. Martin wearing a golden helmet, the major wearing her silver hair) is not as moody as the other

Nice event shot. Not enough drama though to save. Things that may have made it mor dramatic; 6-8 people dancing expressivly aroungd the fire, 24mm lens with the 2 foreground people partly facing each other, flashed lightly with a soft box.

A technically tough shot (who can afford lenses with a 1.4 aperture?) My cheapo cam only goes to 3.1.
The attempt to create depth and foreground goes terribly wrong. Blobs are not foreground. Sorry, otherwise a well-done shot.

I'm glad you posted this photo, I like looking at all the faces in the crowd, the mood. Your ISO comment is a saveme, the photo would be a deleteme because, like others, I can't get past the blurry shoulder...

"6-8 people dancing expressivly aroungd the fire."

Hey, this is Germany. The security-people did not leave anyone beyond the barrier except for us journalists.

If you want more drama: There are some nice detail-shots in the set, all taken at aperture 1.4 & ISO1600 with a 40th to an 80th of a second.

@creativity+: I paid 350 Euros for the lens. Used but in good condition. New you can get it in New York for abot 600 Dollars which are roughly 500 Euros, although the listed price is about 1.350 Euros.

You can get 1.4/50mm-lenses for about 150 to 200 Euros used but in good to very good condition, the 1.4/85mm-lenses are about 600 Euros. I think people pay far too much for camera bodies and do not spent enough on lenses. I would recommend to spend about double the amount you spent for cameras on lenses.
