Stephanie Goren, left, Leah Shields and Judy Shields

Stephanie Goren and Judy Shields were walking for Leah Shields. Shields was one of the seven kids honored at the opening presentation.

Shields has a congenital heart defect known as Tetralogy of Fallot (www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmedhealth/PMH0002534/). The classic form includes four components, although three are always present:

- Ventricular septal defect (a hole between the left and right ventricle)

- Narrowing of the pulmonary outflow tract (the valve and artery that connect the heart and the lungs)

- Overriding aorta (the artery that carries oxygen-rich blood to the body) that is shifted over the right ventricle and ventricular septal defect, instead of coming out only from the left ventricle

- Thickened wall of the right ventricle (right ventricular hypertrophy)

Shields is graduating from George W. Jenkins High School this year and plans to go into journalism. You can follow her blog at leahcasidhe.blogspot.com.
