Can't identify it... but it is beautiful!

UFO re-entry, obviously. Might be something interesting on the hill on the right!

Wow! I've never seen a sky like it. Great capture.

Perhaps vapour trails left by an AWACS plane on an exercise? It's a really unusual shot - nice one!

It is the spirilacus angelorum formation--very rare and spectacular to see...no?. Cloud spirals made by angels messing with the minds of us mere mortals. If not, then I haven't a clue! ;-)

      wonderful spirals....love it.

I'm in Turriff and there were 747's flying over about every 15 minutes yesterday taking a left hand bank turn starting just over Oldmeldrum and finishing the 90 degree turn round about Aberchirder so there were quite a few of these but not as strong as they are in your pic.

      Great shot whatever the cause

These are the opposite of crop circles - either made by UFOs from underground or by pranksters

I don't know the answer either but I'm so glad you got a shot of them as I saw them last night also (near Aboyne) but didn't have the camera.
I also thought they were at different hights, i.e top ring higher up than the middle one. Did you?

    13. megalithicmatt (72 months ago | reply)

I really can't remember the height order but I do recall lots of planes turning overhead throughout the day, but they turned left and had smaller trails. What I didn't manage to fit in this shot properly was the right hand curves - at least one of the streaks actually doubles-back on itself.

The trails do spread, so even if they are small at the beginning, they can become really "wide" clouds at the end.

I think a few planes following a similar path (or one plane taking air photography and going back and forth every X km) could explain that. They do not even have to be turning. If you have a hill (on the right) and a wind going coming from behind you, it will be influenced by that hill, compress around it, and push the clouds on each sides of it.

I am not sure that explanation is clear enough, just tell me.

They were at it again yesterday, but the conditions meant the trails didn't last long. Started at about 10-30 am flying in a clockwise turn, this time comming from the Lossiemouth direction. What surprised me was on the 3rd circut (I was walking the dog at the time, so i saw all 3 cycles) was the appearance of a 2nd aircraft flying the circuit the opposite direction and comming, what appeared, very close to the first but leaving no vapour trails during its entire flight. I really wish I'd had my camera with me.

Unique and wonderful sky. Great capture! :)

Interesting shot. I'd agree with the likely reason being an AWACS on patrol. They tend to fly a racetrack pattern, of around 30 mins each time. See them over Dundee regularly heading back northwards after turning over the city.

These are man made. Notice how they went from contrails to clouds to the weather changes.

It's NOT Chemtrails. See my previous reply as to exactly what it IS.

I settled on contrails over a couple of years ago. I'd never seen such an arrangement of them until that time. There's been a surprising number of replies to this photo since it was posted.

I spotted similar clouds over ramsey Isle of Man a few days ago..... they were herring bone formation but had curled round into ripples in the sky..... I don't think it was caused by a plane as they were quite low & we only get very high flying planes over ramsey.
