Buon 2012

Chiudo il 2011 con un omaggio a Sergio, che non è il cane, ma mio nipote che l'ha fotografato.

Hakkari stelae - Museum of Van

Hakkari stelae - Museum of Van

Turkey

Thirteen stone stelae, never before seen in Anatolia or the Near East, were found in their original location at the centre of Hakkari in 1998. The stelae were carved on upright flagstones measuring between 0.7 m to 3.10 m in height. The stones contain only one cut surface, upon which human figures have been chiselled. The theme of each stela reveals the foreview of the human body. The legs are not represented. Eleven of the stelae belong to the naked warriors always depicted with daggers, spears and axes - the masculine symbols of power. They always hold a drinking vessel made of skin in both hands. Two stelae contain female figures without arms. The stelae may have been carved by different craftsmen using different techniques. Stylistic differences shift from bas-relief to a more schematic linearity. Earliest stelae are in the style of bas-relief while the latest ones are in linear style. They were made during the period from the middle of the fifteenth century B.C. to the eleventh century B.C. by a ruling elite living around Hakkari. Stelae with relief of this type are not common in the ancient Near East. However, there are plenty of close parallels produced by a variety of peoples from the Eurasian steppes between the third millennium B.C. and the eleventh century A.D.
