Unaccompanied children just arrived to the Dadaab refugee camps.

[ENG] There are no real figures about how many unaccompanied children arrived to the Dadaab refugee camps this year during the devastating emergency at the Horn of Africa. Even for UNHCR’s the child protection officers and NGOs like Save the Children is very difficult to detect and protect them. At the reception centers, the first place where arrive displaced people who has crossed the border very recently, is easier to find these children, like the sisters of the picture.

A big number of the children who fled to the refugee camps have biographies which will be hard to bear even for an adult, some of them have been recruited by the army –for militias or the Somali government– and have been child soldiers. Many of them suffer trauma and almost all have become now the head of their families, formed by younger siblings.

[ESP] No existen datos oficiales ni fiables sobre el número real de niños desacompañados que llegaron al campo de refugiados de Dadaab este año tras la devastadora emergencia en el Cuerno de África. Incluso para los oficiales que trabajan en la protección de menores del ACNUR o de ONGs como Save the Children se hace muy difícil detectarlos y protegerlos. En los centros de recepción, el primer lugar al que llegan los desplazados que acaban de cruzar la frontera, es más fácil encontrarlos, como las hermanas de la fotografía.

Un gran número de los niños que llegaron al campo de refugiados huyendo del hambre y la guerra somalí tienen biografías que serían difícil de soportar incluso para un adulto, muchos de ellos han sido reclutados por la milicia o por el gobierno de transición de Somalia y han sido niños soldado. Muchos sufren traumas y casi todos se han convertido ahora en cabezas de familia, familias formadas por sus hermanos menores.

[ENG] In 1991, when the first wave of Somalis arrived to Dadaab, fleeing from hunger and the early bombs of the civil war, still was possible to find water wells not very deep under the sands of this endpoint of the Kenyan map. Now, being the biggest refugee camp in the World, hosting nearly a half of million people living in extremely meager conditions under the weak protection of tents and igloos of plastics and bush branches, water is under meters and meters of deepness. UNHCR efforts are concentrated also in building pipes, wells and fountains. But even, here, in a refugee camp, the drought is squeezing the last drops of water.

[ESP] Cuando los primeros refugiados somalís llegaron a Daddab en 1991 huyendo de la guerra civil y la hambruna, aún en este confín del territorio keniano era posible encontrar pozos de agua a no mucha profundidad. Ahora, convertido en el mayor campo de refugiados del mundo, con medio millón de personas asentadas entre lonas e iglús de ramas y deshechos de forma extremadamente precaria cada vez es necesario cavar más profundo para lograr extraer algo de agua. El ACNUR construye caños, fuentes y pozos, pero la sequía y la superpoblación de desplazados han exprimido casi todas las reservas.

[ENG] A couple of children in the middle of nowhere. Far from the first settlements created in 1991, the new arrivals –exhausted after walking most of the times more than 20 days crossing the desert, fleeing from hunger and drought– who come to Dadaab refugee camp in 2011 are located at the outskirts of the outskirts. Far from everything, in the middle of the desert.

[ESP] Un pareja de niños en mitad de la nada. Muy lejos de los primeros asentamientos creados en 1991 para acoger a los refugiados somalís, que huían de su país; los nuevos desplazados que en 2011 han llegado exhaustos –tras caminatas de más de 20 días por el desierto– toman la tierra que les dejan, en las afueras de las afueras de los campos de refugiados. Un extrarradio, aún más humilde, más desprovisto, más expuesto. Simplemente en mitad de la nada.
