      Ed Emberley did a book - Ed Emberley's Great Thumbprint Drawing Book - which seems to have come out in 1977.

      Maybe he designed the character for Princeton. I don't remember hearing that he did a lot of commercial illustration work. Seems more likely that someone has confused Emberley's book with this design.

      I certainly don't have any first hand knowledge of this illustrations creation.

      Just an update. Neil Baker commented on our entry at Fonts In Use and claims to have invented the character, stating amusingly, “I have the thumb to prove it!”
