The Good Shepherd 35 CMB - Cicely Mary Barker

The Good Shepherd. Jesus often referred to sheep and shepherds as examples.

The Old Testament used sheep and shepherds as examples too, especially in Ezekield 37 where God gives stiff warnings to greedy, selfish Leaders who think only of themselves and who allow bullies to abuse the flock. God warns that His punishment will be fierce for leaders who are greedy and abusive.

Apparently Jesus is thinking of this very thing as he explains to his disciples that the Good Shepherd is a kind and caring leader, who thinks of the welfare of his sheep before even his own well-being. When Jesus talked about shepherds, he was trying to teach his disciples how to be the right kind of leader. A good shepherd doesn't need to bully the flock or use a stick, because his sheep are EAGER to follow their Master. The sheep trust their Good Shepherd and they love him.

Of course, the Good Shepherd is a key theme in Psalm 23 as well, "The Lord is my Shepherd..." which is a very comforting chapter for people who are going through difficult times.
