Nice street view, but I think that the levels
are wrong, too dark on the bottom and to
overexposed on the top. I really like the
idea, but the large view of the pic gives me
some doubts..
Well I can't see a large view, but based on
the image on this page, I think it's verging
on the overbusy: those buildings are very
contrasty and draw attention from the woman
and car, but it ultimately works. Just.
I love the composition and textures of this.
You capture NYC very well, although for some
reason, I usually don't like B&W street
shots -- this one appears to be the
exception.
2 gripes: 1) Contrast is too high in
areas/portions are blown out. 2)I'd like to
have seen some sky. The black building in
the back seems to dominate too much
Otherwise, you've got a beautiful shot ---
something I'm sure you don't need to be told
:-)
I may be critical, but it would be a shame
not to save this one.
Pensiero says that large view gves him
doubts, and now there is no large view. That
gives me doubts. Looks like an ad for Range
Rover. -voted as "deleteme" (from Delete me! group)
Hourman - there's definitely a large view
available. It seems as if your browser for
some reason csan't access (along with some
other folks'...). Strange, but I'm certainly
not hiding anything! :-)
this one was close. i generally am not too
fond of bw shots of buildings.. however, this
one is composed excellently, and the white
buildings in the middle balance perfectly
with the white "stop" painted on
the street. voted "saveme"
yes, I think it would. this is a modern car
in a cityscape made up of old buildings, it
disrupts the timeless feeling. otherwise it's a very appealing photo, I like
the stark mood. maybe the dark areas are
wasting a bit too much detail in the image.
Fair enough, barbfi, but the fact the car is
new (but has a desired image as a timeless
piece of classic), and the buildings
surrounding it, is part of the contrasts in
teh picture. all in the eye of the
beholder...
Kevin: I totally agree with you. But with all
the timing and patience in the world,
unfortunately, an unlikely scenario! :-)
As I've said before, just because it is black
and white doesn't mean it is interesting. No
real subject, and cropped in too close to
give any real perspective on the city
streets.
great City image... it does have a bit much
contrast... but the thing that sold me....
the S is worn off the street enough that it
says "TOP"... upside, at the bottom
of the image... intentional or not... I like
that kind of wordplay.
I love b&w photography, therefore,
there's a lot that I like in this photo. The
contrasty image doesn't bother me but I must
agree with the previous comment regarding the
truck (it looks out of place).
i reallt like this, i like how you've cropped
in tightly allowing no sky and therefore
making it feel even more claustrophobic. i
like the various juxtapositions is the pic
like the very modern rangerover and the old
curling street light, the dark, glass
building and the old white stone buildings.
i feels like the city feels when you are in
it, tho ive never seen NYC that quiet!
Look at that, it got 10... close race and ALL
comments appreciated, as virtuallt all were
constructive.
Seemed as if the contrast was the point of
contention for many, and yes, it's a personal
choice. I for one like absolute blacks and
whites, and am willing to sacrifice some
detail. but maybe this is a bit too heavy,
which i'll take into account for the next
ones.

Wow - ominous! I think that the b&w makes it seem more imposing... clever stuff!

No sky, good. Lots of black, brave. One lady, fascnating. Stop, completes.
Needs the right music.

I don't get a large view, either.
NYC is one of the most photogenic and photographed cities in the world, so the bar has to be pretty damned high to put a pic in the safe.
I don’t like that Range Rover.

Possibly. I really love the left hand side of the picture.
Now, if the vehicle was, say, a grizzly bear... then it would totally clear the bar.

I think this is too dark. I like gritty black and white images, but feel that this one would have benefited with a little less contrast.
