Timgad ruins

Timgad was constructed as a bastion against the Berbers in the Aurès Mountains, by emperor Trajan in AD 100. The city was built after the best Roman plans, with shops, taverns and craftsmen selling from own stalls, as well as a forum almost in the centre, and a theatre just south of this.

I visited this Roman city in 1961. It's vast and impressive. It had a Roman military camp nearby, called Lambesis. There was also a museum. I hope it's still there and nothing was stolen.

For 1½ years I lived in Batna, visited several times, museum @ Lambese very interesting. Water flowing for sewer system designed & built in 100 AD was still working as of 1973 (probably still today !) The Italian presence @ site then were Archeologists still reconstructing the (Sin) city which was major Metropolis for the Roman "Breadbasket"until sacked by Berbers (c.11/1200 ?AD
Streets & curbstones in Batna (& elsewhere) are purloined building blocks from Timgad removed centuries ago. At that time (1973) Timgad was relatively unknown but thoroughly fascinating tourist site.
