Isuzu MU (Mysterious Utility)

Isuzu MU (Mysterious Utility)

This three-door mid-sized SUV was first produced in 1989 and ceased production in 2004.
It was never sold in South Africa but its features might seem familiar since its facia is very similar to that of the long-wheelbase Isuzu KB - a very popular variant that is sold in South Africa.
The Isuzu MU was sold in the States as the Isuzu Amigo. In Europe it was known as the Opel Frontera Sport and in the UK the Vauxhall Frontera Sport. (Holden Frontera Sport in Australia).

This particular model was a private export to Zambia - as most people in Southern African countries who drive right-hand drive vehicles import second hand cars from Japan that would otherwise be considered unroadworthy or too expensive to run in the far east. Cars can be imported for as little as JPY 350 000 (GBP 3000) or less - a bargain when you consider that these countries have no local vehicle assembly or manufacturing sectors.

Second hand Japanese imports are very rare in South Africa, as taxes and import duties are in place to protect the local vehicle manufacturing industry. Most of the Japanese imports that you see on the roads here are from other right-hand drive Southern African countries.
