Madison and Pearl. Pearl is the one with the big ears.

My older daughter found Pearl in a Wal-Mart parking lot two days before Christmas, 2010. She'd been abandoned there, in the rain, a mere puppy, with a card tied to her neck. Scratched in ink on the back of the card were the words "Take me. I'm free."

At first my daughter was just going to bring the dog home so we could find her a home. It turns out that we were the home.

This is Zero. He was abandoned by his previous family and left to wander the neighborhood begging for food. Friends took him in, but they couldn't keep him, so he came to us. He doesn't like little boys, and he's allergic to bee stings. He likes to sleep under the blankets, gets anxious if someone leaves the house, and he enjoys sitting with a tennis ball under his front feet, gripped tightly in his paws.

Zero is what his first family thought of him, but he is no Zero.

Father's Day, 2011, the best gift a dad could ask for: His beautiful daughter patiently posing for him during magic hour.
