this photo was taken at pm17:46 of 2006/9/15, before the
"besieging the city" (a.k.a. "City Encirclement ")
march starts. there are around 30,000 people on this picture. at that
moment, participants just begin to arrive at Kaitakelan Boulevard
after their office hour on Friday.
(there are about 30,000 people on the above picture when i took. but it increased to 360,000 more suddenly after the office hours. unfortunately, the owner; NTU refuse me to take any more pictures on their building after this pix...)
the crowd swelled so fast, Former Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) Chairman Shih Ming-teh, leader of the "anti-corruption" campaign aimed to force out President Chen for a spate of corruption scandals involving himself, members of his family and close aides, decided to move up the march to 6 p.m. from the original schedule of 7 p.m. as there was no room for more participants at the plaza in front of the Presidential Office.
wearing red clothes and wielding glowing lights, there are more than 360,000 people attending this mass "anti-corruption and depose-Chen" campaign to march through Taipei streets and to successfully encircle both the Presidential Office and central Taipei city. They are chanting slogans like "Down with corruption!" and "(President) Ah-Bian, Step down!" to express their emotion all the way...
Earlier this month the Presidential Office acknowledged that prosecutors had questioned Chen about the use of false invoices to account for part of a secret fund used to sustain Taiwanese diplomatic activities abroad.
Chen denied any wrongdoing in the affair, and insisted he will stay until the end of his Presidental term.
In July, Chen's son-in-law Chao Chien-min was indicted for insider trading involving a local development firm -- a charge he denies.
First lady Wu Shu-chen is also under investigation for allegedly profiting from the transfer of an upscale department store to new owners. Chen's office insists she was not involved.
