Amimals in a Landscape 1914
Franz Marc, German 1880-1916 Oil on Canvas
In 1915, Marc wrote, "Very early, I found people to be 'ugly'. Animals seemed more beautiful, more pure."
Here, three oxen are fragmented into a kaleidoscope of colors. Yet the animals are completely integrated into the natural surroundings as well as into the painting itself. Marc considered animals the most fitting symbols of a harmonious state of being.
