Murky Coffee has been seized
Apparently they're having some trouble with the Office of Tax and Revenue.
Probably unnecessary 2/09 update: Murky Coffee closed for good on 3/20/08.

yeah, they owe $220,000 in back taxes and fines. Nick hasn't posted anything new on their blog in over a week, but the last I heard was they were still hoping for a quick resolution. All i know for sure is that my neighborhood is desperate to have them back :(

Me, too - outside of Patisserie Poupon, it's my favorite cup of coffee in town.

Bad news: I heard today that it's more like $400,000. Nick still hasn't posted on his blog, and there's now a letter from his landlord's lawyer taped to the door announcing 30 days until he's kicked out. I'm pretty much thinking that whole reopening thing isn't gonna happen.

That's a shame - I wonder if the Arlington location is going to be shuttered too?
I can only imagine what kind of decision-making led them to being 400K in the hole ...

@erin: where did you hear the $40k figure? I've seen this mentioned, but I can't find the source.

I heard it while sitting in Port City on Thursday, along with about a dozen other people who desperately wished to be sitting a few blocks down the street. I mean, I like Port City, but it's so darn crowded now!

haha - karma sucks doesn't it?

Yeah - especially when it denies the rest of the city such good espresso (and when there are so many more richly deserving targets right down the street!)

Laydee E: I've heard rumors that there are tax troubles at the Arlington location, too - I think it has less to do w/being cool, and more w/not knowing the fundamentals of running a business (or keeping one going long-term, anyway).
