Our Daily Challenge: black and white or sepia

    -=-

Fatboy Slim, That Old Pair of Jeans, for fun.

    -=-

the geek behind the curtain: all shots and layers in this assemblage were taken and developed by myself.

2 - 3 hours to clean the background grass, sidewalk, and cars away from the guy on the bike.

6 hours of trying different backgrounds, all of which failed.

threw in a white layer that i was going to use as a square gradient when the stark simplicity of the white caught me off guard. built a little multi-directional shadow and then moved on into thinking about what it would mean to be here.

in terms of technique this has grown into my normal "favorite" method of image construction that i've been pushing over the last couple months. i was in the car, took a candid of someone on the sidewalk with the point-and-shoot camera, got the image home and started playing.

Garth, the effort you put into this was very worth it. The pure white background is very powerful. All the more so viewed on black.

Your killin me .... great work...love this!

    8. smartyarty41 (9 months ago | reply)

this is fantastic. especially like laurarama said, seeing this against black looks amazing. If you you could put some black bands at the top and bottom even, it would pop even more. sorry, not trying to be rude, your work is always impressive, but seeing it against the black background in the light box makes it even better imho. excellent garth

well done - i really like the white background here - like others seem to agree that it expresses infinite possibility/potential, yet his stance seems almost to convey some hesitancy which may lead to said potential to be left under realized.

    15. siriusdebbie (9 months ago | reply)

well worth the effort. the white background is fantastic. I didn't think skippy's suggestion made sense - the white is so powerful - but looking at this on black it does stand out. either way fantastic work!

Excellent. It's got great depth, even though it uses so much negative space. Love his posture. Very well done!

whehey!!!! such effective use of that plain background, even of it did take ages!
It really leaps off the screen, stops you....
and raises all sorts of questions of possibility very nicely indeed :o)

    30. pukunui81 (9 months ago | reply)

The fake shadows don't quite do it for me ... however, I still like this shot. I like the story that is suggested here. He is facing the great unknown and is hesitating on the threshold, as it were. And we are left wondering what it is he sees. Very nice.
