This is the gear I took earlier this year on a 2-month trek through Europe.
***Check out the notes on the image for more information.
Some items acquired along the way, not mentioned in this shot:
- additional contact lens solution in Cinque Terre, Italy
- additional laundry detergent in Trieste, Italy
- H&M short-sleeve button-up shirt in Trieste, Italy
Also, my wife and I did split up some small city-specific travel books along the way, which aren't shown here.
I was very happy with having a 42L pack, in terms of size. The Rick Steves' pack I took did not have much support (lacking an internal frame), so the cost of having a fairly minimal, low-profile appearance is that it gets painful to carry for multiple miles at a time, but not a total dealbreaker to me.
While the Keen shoes held up, if I were going on the trip again, I'd consider possibly just Nike tennis shoes instead. There weren't occasions where dress shoes or nicer shoes were needed (or where trainers were banned), so the Keens were maybe overkill.
If I owned a micro 4/3rds camera (like the new Nikon 1), I may have taken that over my Nikon D90, simply because the D90 & 18-200mm VR lens combination contributed the the majority of weight I was carrying around.
