Century plant

Century plant

The century plant is an agave, originally from Mexico, and when we first moved to California and found this plant growing along a path near our house, we were told the stalk grows only once a century. Believe me, in the 45 years I've been walking past this plant, I can assure you that bit of lore just plain ain't so. According to Wikipedia, "When it flowers, the spike with a cyme of big yellow flowers may reach up to 8 m (26 ft) in height. Its common name likely derives from its semelparous nature of flowering only once at the end of its long life. The plant dies after flowering, but produces suckers or adventitious shoots from the base, which continue its growth." Anyway, it's an impressive plant, and it's nice to see it continuing in good health after all these years.

Not a very lady like pose, but there's a mole down in that there hole.

Not a very lady like pose, but there's a mole down in that there hole.

Of all the shepherds we've had, we've never had one with as sensitive a nose as our new gal Roma. Several times I've nearly had my arm ripped out of my shoulder socket when she suddenly lurched against her leash into the brush along side the trail because of some scent that came drifting past her nose; and she goes absolutely nuts when she comes to a mole hole. It took her maybe five minutes to dig as deep as she's gotten here, and it took all my strength when I finally decided to haul her up out of there. No moles (voles) were harmed during the filming of this dig.

The topic for Our Daily Challenge is "very big." I'd say her butt is big enough to qualify...
