Hex Star steps

When freehand drawing a hexagon, I start w/one side and then eyeball the top and bottom to be the same length legs (approximately, clearly...) then the opposite side legs. The new star "arm" begins about halfway up the length of the previous arm. But there is lots of flexibility in size, shape, length and angle of arms...
