Insignificance... | by Eden Brackstone

I call this one 'Insignificance...'

Thats all we are in the grand scheme of things. Just a small planet circling a star that is one of hundreds of billions in our small corner of the universe.

A few weeks ago, myself along with good friends Codie Westphall ('cod_fish_rox' on Flickr) and Kate McDonald took a drive to Wilson Bay. While gazing at the stars and having good chat I decided to pull out my 7D... On this spectactular and clear night, Codie and I guessed the point of rotation and positioned it in the upper right hand corner of the frame. The large band running through the centre of the frame is the Milky Way.

I was shooting with a wide open aperture at 24mm. Exposure time was 3077 seconds (a little over 51 minutes). Taken at Wilson Bay, Queenstown, around 1am.

This is the first time I have ever attempted a proper night shot, let alone one that lasted this long. The image is plagued by noise issues and little imperfections here and there. Overall however, given my lack of experience I'm actually quite happy with this result.

I really look forward to doing more of this sort of thing!
