Uh, those aren't [all] men. Very cool series
of photos -- I like how you can see the
flashes from the other photographers'
cameras. Probably that's why the ghost
images, eh? Cool.
cr - they did! At the time I thought it was
kind of funny that they snuffed out the
flaming torches just before the best bit of
the show, but now that I stop to think about
it, there is a certain logic there...!
Thanks for your comments - glad you like em.
The flash on my own digital camera seems to
be broken, so I need to rely on other
people's at times like this! I'm not sure if
it would have been up to the job anyway, to
be honest. The ghost images that result from
more than one flash can be pretty
distracting, but they also make for some cool
effects sometimes...
they fell - oh no! I was unsighted at some
points (I was behind the pyramid futher up
the hill) but once the female redman had
reached the top I think I stopped looking :P
Hi Uncle, thanks for the invitation - I'm
glad you like it! But I'm afraid I'm not
going to add it, because the group encourages
people to include specific images in their
comments and I hate that.
Siúlóir-Domhanda - I only just saw your
comment! I'm afraid I'm just a bit confused
about what that group is about...?
>I'm not sure why they call them all 'Red
Men', to be honest.
When the current Beltane Fire Festival
celebrations started in 1988, the White Women
were indeed all women and the Red Men were
indeed all men. One of the ideas was to
create a strong female role and a more
fleeting Pan-like male role. For the first
few years the gender of the performers was
set, but in the mid 90s a couple of
performers asked if they'd could exchange
roles and we felt by then that the roles had
been established and so it went from there.
Whether you are male or female when you take
on the role you take on the established
character role of "Red Man" or
White Woman". We've had some
conversations over the years about whether
the name of the characters should change but
for various reasons it just kind of stuck...

Aren't they cold?

You'd think so, wouldn't you? The rain was properly coming down by this point.
I guess they keep warm by intensive dancing and drumming...

I had my heart in my mouth at this point, hoping they wouldn't fall and hurt themselves - they did so well!

M - quite right. I'm not sure why they call them all 'Red Men', to be honest.

Hey m, thanks for clearing that up! Always did wonder. :)
Oddly enough, I've never noticed any male White Women - I guess they wouldn't stick out as much though eh?
