Iosepa Sunrise

Iosepa Sunrise

The tiny settlement of Iosepa in Utah's Skull Valley is a place torn between two worlds. It was the home of Polynesian Mormons who came to the Salt Lake Valley in the late 1800's to be close to their Zion and holy temple. However, intolerance being what it is, they found themselves unwelcome among the main body of LDS faithful and instead settled in a desolate, sun-parched plat about 70 miles outside of Salt Lake City.

Occupied from 1889 to 1917, the settlement ultimately folded when the LDS Church built the Laie Hawaii temple. The small graveyard still sitting on the site shows wear from the desert, which in its persistent way still tries to reclaim the land.
