Since Conoco/Phillips has taken over, the old orange and blue globe signs are being replaced by flat red and blue signs.

My favorite gas spot ever!
Oh no!!!
I miss the States and would be very frustrated when I go back to find them gone, how am I going to shoot them???
I just love their 70's looks, and the orange, and the blue on the orange!

Mr Nylon: Unfortunately, as per the owner of these stations, the globes have to be destroyed and then photographed for proof of their demise.

That sucks. This may sound strange, I like buying gas from 76 because I like the orange ball. Then again, I have an Mac because I liked the glowing Apple (among other things), and drive a Jeep Liberty (Cherokee elsewhere in the world) because I liked the front grill.

If they're going to get rid of all of these, can't a few of them be salvaged somehow? I don't understand why we don't have historic preservation resources for twentieth century stuff! Often things are destroyed before they can be deemed "historically important". This has to change. So much excellent post-war design has been flushed from history.

In San Jose, California, I just drove by a newer 76 station that had a ball on a sign with Conoco-Philips added to the bottom.

The people at AutoWeek magazine used my picture without my permission and without giving me credit for shooting the picture!

What kind of world/fucked up organisation would insist that the balls HAVE to be destroyed??
Oh yeah I forgot we all are supposed to be in the constant grip of paranoia so the reason is probably that some terrorists* would set up fake gas stations to entice people in and chop them up and feed them to their camels or some shit like that.
I dont see any reason why good design and roadside architecture/20th century pop art, should ever be destroyed, and that magazine better have a good one for using the pic without permission too.
wtf.

I remember the San Diego Sport Arena had 76 as a sponsor and there was a spinning 76 ball up towards the ceiling of the place.
I've see the new red 76 ball. There is one off the 5 freeway in Tustin.
Its real low to the ground too, so you can't miss it.

When I was working in Las Vegas we used to stop at one of these stations for breakfast on the way out of town, it was a truck stop. Our code name was "The Orange Ball" in case we were overheard by our supervisor on where we were going to meet.
