Why is there an American flag at the
entrance? With that kind of name, they
should be flying a Confederate battle flag,
and a sign reading "No Dogs or N*****s
Allowed".
Of course this was 1960. If someone tried to
use that name today, the NAACP would demand
that the place be burned down and the owners
throw into prison for inciting racial hatred.
That pointy thingy at the top gives it much
character! I like the sputnik ceiling lamps
inside. I think they are making a mini
comback now. I could have sworn I seen
sputnik lamps when I walked around in Planet
Hollywood Casino.
Super -- I have not seen this card before --
very exciting! While Mammy's Kitchen is
apparently still there according to Google,
this Roto-Sphere is definitely gone. I have
been to Myrtle Beach many times over the past
ten years and up and down Kings Hwy a
gazillion times and couldn't have missed it.
There were two Roto-Spheres shipped to Myrtle
Beach (#36 in 10/61 and #77 in 7/62). Only
one other went to SC -- to Columbia, #71 in
6/62.
FYI Roadsidepictures: a total of three went to Las Vegas (1961,
1962, 1963) and no others to Nevada. We know
one went to the Showboat == but what about
the other two? Keep diggin!
I stand corrected, actually the sign I saw
was on July 23, 2005 not 2006 as I mentioned
above. The sign is an entirely different
sign. Mammy's is in orange block letter and
has a slight arch in the center. The word
Kitchen is green and in written script.
I have a photo of it in my "NEON
Signs" set on my page.
Ate here yesterday before leaving Myrtle
Beach for Savannah. (Where I am now) Of
course, the place has none of the cool
signage anymore, just a boring plastic
awning. Breakfast was good though! There's
two locations, the other is on Ocean Blvd,
which is (of course) right on the Atlantic
where all the hotels/motels are.

Mammy's kitchen is still there - I ate there last year. It still looks the same. I wish I had taken a picture
It's delicious, and people line up outside to get in.
And nobody makes a fuss about the name. : )

Nothing says Mammy's Kitchen like a giant rotosphere!

I don't think the rotosphere is still there (or the big portrait of "Mammy" on the sign!). I've never actually been there, so I could be wrong.

It was dark in 2006 when I drove by, but Mammy's Kitchen was still lit up in neon.

But there was no Roto-Sphere on top of the sign, right?
