There Are No Flight Delays In Airplane Banana Land
This week for the Mid-Century Supper Club pool, I stole a recipe that Julia scanned from 1957 and made the "Airplane Bananas With Fudge Sauce". I decided to detour a little and use the chocolate wafers to make the plane more realistic (humor me here, people). I was pleased that my banana looked like an actual banana and not like an old dried up sausage as in the original picture.
Thanks, Wrigley's for another fine recipe that the youngsters will surely love!
(and Thanks, Julia for posting the original so that I could steal it!)

*Standing ovation!* This is a stunning and evocative recreation! I think you made the right choice with the chocolate wafers for sure. And your whipped cream clouds are a dream!

*clap clap clap!* Nicely done, Eartha! Your airplane does look more realistic than the original :-) This looks to be extremely edible! I'm glad you rewarded yourself after last week's Bridge Loaf!

Eartha, you have done it again! It looks so realistic, it's incredible!!
Did you chew some gum, to get "the little lift" while you were working on this?
worldslargestthings (52 months ago | reply)
So, where does the Wrigley's go?!? Is there a hidden bubble-gum airstrip, or is it just a bystander, admiring your very skilled, genre-appropriate recreation?
Jacob...K (52 months ago | reply)
Seriously.........You should run a diner........it could be really cool!
BTW, I love that you included the inexplicable gum
Miss Retro Modern (52 months ago | reply)
Oooh, Jacob's on to something! Let's move to Portland and open a diner!

30 hours ago? Damn it!
Brava la Prima! It's wonderful. Your shooting angle and choosing chocolate wafers made a huge difference. I can see the airplane!

You bring the past alive with your artistry. Very nice!

That one actually looks edible.

You are a better photo-stylist than the professional magazine one! Of course now that I look closer at the illustration, those whipped cream dollops are suspect. Sorry, the swirls are too regular. Air brushed no doubt. Those magazine cheaters!

Bravo!

Lookforthewoman: Thanks! : )
Amber: You really should try one of these. They are BEYOND sickening.
Julia: Thanks! I'm back to where I have to actively hunt for your photos again...so don't feel bad if you miss mine as I'm sure I'm missing yours too.
Jello Kitty: Why, thanks! : )
Becktress: I know! For a change, right?
Turkeychik: Oh yes, I started to realize more and more that their illustration with a sham...cheaters!
Willowfan: Thanks, love!

Thanks, Rachzel! I think I'm going to put this on my "breakfast in bed for guests" menu if I'm ever THAT good of a host.

Oh gosh! I could get a smile out of many people in my family if I made the 747 of Banana Land! Cool! Fun to make, I'm sure. Good job.

and the fact you included the Wrigley's in the picture makes me beam with delight.

ridiculously cool. you even got the plate right!
Whiskeygonebad (52 months ago | reply)
Oooooh it's sooo TWA!
I love those puffy schlag clouds.
Some fun things to try:
Some M&Ms pushed in as windows. (may or may not work)
A red-eye flight with a dark-blue plate with stars and
a cookie cut into a crescent Moon.
Oops, the plane has sprung a fuel leak.... well we're in luck:
It's Jamaican rum!
P.S. Rarely does food look better than the menu picture but you did it here.
John McNab (52 months ago | reply)
Do you HAVE to consume the chewing gum with the rest of it?

that is stunning....so glad you replaced a stick of gum with the wafers...hard to believe that gum would be included in one of JULIE CHILDs receipes...she made the original , right?
or was it ALICE WATERS

I absolutely love this:)

Texas to Mexico: You should try it...though the clouds were the only really non-sickening part! Oh, the gum wasn't bad either...
Dania: Thanks! I think you've got some genius in you too, lady!
Opal In The Rough: Thanks! I searched all over to find a pack didn't have a tacky basketball promotion all over it. I'm a dork.
Ellynkocher: Thanks! I take my tacky food recreating VERY seriously.
Whiskeygonebad: I like the window idea! I also wished I'd had some tiny little people figures so that I could recreate it as an airline crash!
John McNab: You don't have to, but after you taste how sickening this all is, you kind of want the gum. I did at least!
Spins LPs: Ha! Well, thank you!
Addadada: I only wish that we DID know who was responsible for these gum ad recipes...
Mrelia: Hey, thanks!
Stagasaurus: Thanks! You should try it..it was not the best but fun.

Fine job, Eartha - you got the rear wing in nice and strait! I still don't know if I want to go near it, but at least here you can tell that it's a bannana with sauce poured on it - the ad leave's a little too much to the imagination (O:
