Austin: Frost Bank in Mist

Once again: the Frost Bank building, Austin, night. My fascination with this dominating structure continues late this night. All the heavy lifting of SXSW more or less finishes for this year at 2:00 a.m. with the crashing crescendoes of the last band showcases. Happy, weary, and footsore, I adjourn, as one does, to an after-hours spot for a last tip-of-the-hat drink. It's not necessary, strictly speaking, but what is? On the way back to the hotel, in gathering mist, the Frost Bank gleams over downtown.

Like all my other incidental shots of Austin this trip, this one is hand-held, since the tripod stayed home.

Check my X Marks set for more shots of Austin and South by Southwest 2006.

Replaced in March of 2008 with a noise-filtered version.

Spotted as high as #139 in Interestingness. A version of this picture, recast in green, appears with permission on the web site for the syndicated radio program Earth & Sky, a terrific show which I listen to on my local NPR affiliate, WNYC.

lots of noise in this shot, but i can understand why...
its a nice simple shot, but you can feel the mist coming down..thats what makes this..its a no bull shot (No pun intended!)

This is my favorite of the shots you've posted of this building. Something about the color of the sky, I think.

Impressive clarity for handheld, a shame about the noise but I understand why it was unaviodable.

I'm not so taken with the composition, it just doesn't convey to me the sense of this big, dominating building on the skyline which you describe, sorry.

I like the vignetting and the almost black and white view of the tower. Well done on the hand held shot late at night after a few drinks. I can only do that if I lean on a wall or a friend!

The subject is interesting but I'm not fan of the color and the texture of teh background, between brown and black.

A great handheld night shot - I'm impressed, I can never get them this crisp without a tripod.... SXSW is meant to be really cool - did you discover any great new bands?

The back ground seems off to me, but the building is very striking!!
