Varsity, Palo Alto 1997

    Newer Older

Opened as the Varsity Theatre in 1927, it became the Fox Varsity Theatre for a while. Seating was for 975. It closed as a movie theatre in 1994 and despite local protests was converted into a Borders bookstore as this 1997 photo shows. All cinematic details within the building have been retained in the conversion.

very cool, it reminds me of another theater in this country i read about that was also converted into a bookstore(River Oaks Theater in Houston). hopefully Borders won't try to tear it down at some point for a larger store, which is unfortunately what has been proposed for the River Oaks Theater in Houston(and crossing my fingers its somehow saved from demolition).

it really is a beautiful book store (since they kept a lot of the old architecture when converting it), and i think turning it into a classy joint that still retains the old sign was better than just tearing down the whole thing :)
