loosestrife close
Purple loosestrife is considered an invasive species in Massachusetts. Originally imported as an ornamental, it is quickly taking over wetlands. It is lovely to look at, but unfortunately it crowds out native species, like these cattails. It is a perennial plants and has no natural predators here. Bees love it, as do redwing blackbirds, so it is not totally without merit. When it blooms, some meadows suddenly turn magenta almost overnight.

Ohhhh....I love these fields of purple flowers. I always see them every summer while driving to my brother's house in Tewksbury. The other day when going to my neice's party, I saw some fields of them by they seem to be dying in the last stages of life. The ones near you seem very fresh !
