I loved these machines. A book is placed in a cradle with the pages opened just enough to read them but not so open that the book will crack. Then a clear plastic platen is pressed down to flatten the pages. Cameras mounted on both sides of the book take pictures of the opposing page. Then the platen is lifted, the page is turned, and the platen is replaced for a new shot.
