I met Saravuth Inn almost 2 years ago, in the coldest day of that winter. He was asking for a cigarette and I was struggling to keep my fingers from freezing while trying to take some pictures. In these 2 years I learned about Saravuth's struggles. A struggle for his legal status in the US, a country that brought war to his homeland, saved his life and than abandoned him and failed to give him citizenship. And and even bigger struggle, a struggle to keep his dignity despite all the hardship. In these 2 years I learned about Saravuth heroic effort to keep his optimism and his believe in himself, his ability to attract people to care about him, one chess player of many in the square, and his hope that one day soon he will be able to travel to Cambodia, his homeland, with American passport.
Recently, the talented film maker Alex Lora made a short movie about Saravuth named: Odysseus Gambit, a movie that won already many international awards and is now participating in the Sundance film festival. I encourage you to go see the movie in the festival web site, it worth your time.
