Color My Frozen Custard
...and here's the color version of the pic previously posted here in monochrome
I love the fact they call it 'frozen custard'. To us Brits that's some kind of an anomaly, the idea of that thick lumpy yellow stuff we had on every school dinner being transformed into something altogether much more palatable and appealing, is quite a revelation!

Good to see you are still about.
Is this Asbury Park, by any chance? I was a soldier stationed at Fort Monmouth in the early 70’s and spent a fair bit of time staggering along the Asbury Board Walk.
Those are vivid memories, even when not entirely pleasant.

Looks like Seaside Heights NJ. I have played quite a few skill cranes in Lucky Leos :)

Thanks Doodle - nice to be back - if you follow my link to the monochrome version all will be revealed. As GaryM concurs it is in fact down the coast a few miles at Seaside Heights.
As we took the air there recently, I was told by my wife and her friends (and contemporaries of the period) that the place was not what it was with regard to the teeming crowds of yesteryear. Whilst this maybe true, today's teenagers and extended families still seemed to be enjoying similar kinds of fun some 25/30 years on.
Gary- skill cranes - what is this ancient art?
Gary M (72 months ago | reply)
The skill cranes are the games that you have to manuever the steel claw over your prize and try to pick it up without dropping it. They are usually jammed packed with stuffed animals. Seaside Heights appears to be the "skill crane " capital of NJ. I usually dont run into as many of these machines further down the coast as you do on this stretch of boardwalk. ;)

Fascinating stuff Gary. One thing that always amuses me about the boardwalk at Seaside is the stalls that carry guitars and other musical equipment as prizes. I've seen people walking with around with 'won' teddy bears, but never a spakling new Fender, Gretsch or Gibson - do you think I'm onto something here??

Looks like a fun place to wander around in, get a taste of frozen custard (I hear it's quite thicker than ice cream, but still very delicious). :) #2 (from the IWANT5! group)

The impact of the B/W version is bigger due the simple enunciation of the lines. In my opinion the color version would work better with more contrast and saturation. As it is the colors are too faded.

Ah but that custard... I like the faded colors, it's very realistic to the Shore in the morning... 123nj

"frozen custard" is usually ice cream with egg in the recipe.

The King Kustard trucks seem to have disappeared from NYC, which is a great pity.

Ah... Seaside. You know, it's funny. We live, maybe 40 minutes from here (or 6 hours, depending on traffic) and NEVER ever go. The crowds. The noise. Blah blah blah. Yet, every time I'm there, I DO NOT want to leave. Why do we deny ourselves the things we love? I like the carnival barkers. I LIKE the way that the smell of candied everything mixes with the salt air.
That's it. Before the summer is out, we are taking our little girl to the boardwalk. Thanks for reminding me. I'll have a chocolate/vanilla twist in your honor...

Thanks for your reminiscence Snow, hope you enjoyed the Choc/vanilla twist - I know I will next time I visit.
Not being a native, I was amazed that some relations of my Wife (New Yorkers) should be so mesmerized by the place on a visit they had whilst we were there. They subscribed to the 'couldn't leave' pull the place seems to have. I wondered why the place has such magnetism when surely there's Coney Island much closer? But what do I know, I've not been to the NY attraction?
Thanks everyone for the recent comments.

mmm frozen custard....
Very nice colors, and it kind of has a summer is over feel to it.
By the way...
I live in New Jersey, and I am originally from New York..
I prefer Seaside over Coney ( Coney Island is very run down, polluted, and the crowd is not my favorite), but prefer Long Beach Island over both.
Once again, love the photograph. =]
