Backyard Friend I

I saw this garter snake while mowing the lawn and picked him up to show him to my 6 year-old son. He likes to check them out for a while, then lets them go. We later found a small toad and gave it to him for a snack. Used a shallow dof.

I used to catch these as a kid in a field with a lot of rocks. I would grab them by the head. But after watching the late Steve Irwin (the "Crocodile Hunter") handle snakes by the end of the tail I started doing it like that. It is much easier! I would never do this with any other kind of snake - they have no teeth and are non-poisonous.

Here are two other shots of this garter snake: What Are You Lookin' At? and Backyard Friend II.
