Tiatrist Cyriaco Dias awarded Antonio Puroskar 2012

Veteran tiatrist and freedom fighter Cyriaco Dias, in a traditional Indian attire, received the prestigious Antonio Pereira Konknni Puroskar 2012 of the Thomas Stephens Konknni Kendr (TSKK) at a public function held at the TSKK courtyard on January 26. Mandd Sobhann Gurkar and the General Secretary of Global Konknni Organization, Eric Ozario, presented the award to Cyriaco for his life time contribution to Konknni stage and films. The award consists of a shawl, memento, traditional turban and cash Rs.25,000.

Veteran tiatrist and freedom fighter Cyriaco Dias was honoured by the prestigious Antonio Pereira Konknni Puroskar 2012 by Thomas Stephens Konknni Kendr (TSKK) at a public function held at the TSKK courtyard on January 26. Mandd Sobhann Gurkar and the General Secretary of Global Konknni Organization, Eric Ozario, was the Chief Guest and Fr. Rosario Rocha, S.J. the Jesuit Provincial of the Goa Province was the Guest of Honour. Dr. Pratap Naik, S.J. and Dr. Chandralekha D’Souza compered the function, with the Mother Teresa Brass Band from Honavar entertaining the guests with its lively Konknni music. Rabin D’Pietro sang two songs from “Amchem Noxib” and “Nirmonn” Konknni films. Eric Ozario stressed the need of research in various fields of Konknni and highlighted TSKK’s great contribution to Konknni language, research and movement. He said that TSKK is the only institution which is fully dedicated for research in Konknni, and stressed the point that TSKK should continue the five centuries old Jesuit tradition of scholarship.
Cyriaco Dias, the veteran well known Tiatrist and Konknni film artist and the freedom fighter, was selected for the Puroskar (award) for his life time contribution to Konknni stage and films, for the prestigious Antonio Pereira Konknni Puroskar (APKP) 2012. The award consists of a shawl, memento, traditional turban and cash Rs.25,000.
The other awards include Fr. Ave Maria Afonso (Jack Sequeira Konknni Puroskar 2011), Mrs. Irene Cardozo (Basila Carvalho Konknni Puroskar 2011), Br. Eusebio Miranda ( Maria Afonso Konknni Puroskar 2011), Marcos Gonsalves (Martir Floriano Vaz Puroskar 2011).
TSKK also distributed Lourenço & Umbelina de Scholarship to Ms. Anna Fernandes, XI Std. student of Don Bosco School, Panaji; Helen Baptista Scholarships for opting Konknni as a third language to Ms. Sabiya Dukandar and Master Taufiq Badekhan IX students of Govt. High School, Alto Porvorim; Quadros Family Scholarship for scoring the highest marks in Konknni among Catholic students for the X Std. examination conducted by the Goa Secondary Board was given to Ms. Wilma Fernandes of Holy Cross Institute, Quepem.

Late Jack de Sequeira Awards 2012

Several outstanding Goans were feted by the Konkani Songit Somajik Kala Kendr, Taleigao, to mark the contribution of the late Jack de Sequeira (Opinion Poll) towards preventing Goa being merged into the neighbouring state of Maharashtra. The awardees included prominent tiatrists, sportspeople (Brahmanand) and others including cartoonist Alexyz. The chief guest on the occasion was Fr Conceicao da Silva and guest of honour Teotonio Pereira, the last of the UG MLAs from Goa's first Legislative Assembly.

THE CHANGING FACE OF CANADIANS: Terry Fay SJ, from the University of St Michael’s College of the University of Toronto, narrated two engrossing stories in a power-point presentation “The Changing Face of Canadian Catholics and Canadian Goans”, in the History Hour series of the Xavier Centre of Historical Research, Porvorim, Goa, on January 19, 2012. Fr Fay began with the changes in Canadian spirituality including Catholic social thought, education, feminism, subjective awakening, and national multiculturalism. He followed it up by revealing how Goans through their social and athletic groups, the formation of GOA, its outreach to new arrivals, the democratization of GOA, its cultural and artistic activities, and creating the International Goan Organization have contributed to the changing face of Canadian spirituality.

80 Goan Artists gathered at "Paint Your Freedom" unique art camp organised by Vinsan Graphics, under the guidance of senior artist Rajendra Usapkar, at the footpath opposite ESG Complex in Panjim, on 12th January 2012 from 2 pm to 8 pm. The grand show including nearly half a dozen large canvases was inaugurated by art lover Narayan Bandekar from Vasco. Artist Naguesh Sardessai compered the superb event, while cartoonist Alexyz and artist Yolanda addressed the gathering and paid eloquent tributes to famed Goan cartoonist Mario Miranda, the day being his 'month's mind' (one month since his death). Teenage musician Ashley Fernandes and his friends played some traditional Goan music. L-R: Artist Vamona Navelcar, arist Shaista Thapar, chief Guest Nana Bandekar and other VIPS.
