venetian mask

"Venetian masks emerged in a climate of cultural and religious repression during the Medieval era in Italy. People donned the colorful masks to free themselves from judging neighbors, all of whom knew each other in such a small city. The gentry class and peasants alike sought anonymity for promiscuity, gambling, and other indiscretions." -- Wikipedia

"Venice is like eating an entire box of chocolate liqueurs in one go."

A very interesting shot, the mask and surounding collar etc. are very rich and opulent looking. A very nice shot.

I was already homesick for New Orleans from the stuff I've been working on and you just made it worse. I took a mask making class at the University of New Orleans from two master Italian carnival mask makers. Beautiful image.

I'm not sure how effective it would be at disguising the identity of the wearer with those large openings for the eyes - but on the other hand the lighting wouldn't have been very good either.

promiscuity, gambling, and other indiscretions ... ooooooh yes please!

i love all the detail and frippery here.

I love these masks, but I actually find them quite sinister. I suppose it is because you never know what it is hiding!

I also saw this on the Explore page and the mauve gargoyle!

A few days ago i was in venice... i saw lots of beautiful mask like this one, but i didn't have a chance to take good pictures of them... or buy one :-(

Let me tell you i love your picture, this mask its very beautiful, and the datails are great... so i like too the way you take the picture... i mean, the mask its not complete but is enought, just perfect... maybe if you show it complete the picture will not be so magnificent...

Do you understand what i mean? (sorry my english its not perfect)

      Regards from Madrid

This is super - love the colours and the angle gives character to the mask.
