Ooooh... I like it!! What a fabulous idea! How are you going to quilt it?

Wow wow wow wow wow - the colours are just fabulous together - is that a Kona mid grey? Did you draw on the cages? are you going to sew over them? If you don't get an explore on this one, I'll eat my hat! Gosh you're so inventive.

      Thank you! Thank you!

-The grey is just a non brand cotton, I can get good quality solids at the market here for a fraction of the price of Kona.
-I drew the cages on with a permanent fabric marker and the birds are raw edge appliqued. I've been wanting to draw on fabric for ages, and I'm so glad I did!! The possibilities are endless, not endless really but as far as my drawing skills reach lol!

-I'm not sure yet how to quilt it!!
Should I free motion on the whole quilt? Or perhaps some straight line quilting? Or divide the quilt up, the tufted tweets need a good quilting because of them being slightly off grain, so some heavier quilting there. Then free motion along the lines of the cages and stipple the rest? Any ideas?

How about quilting little swirls and swoops in the grey to indicate air movement?

    17. {Leila} Where Orchids Grow (32 months ago | reply)

The pressure is on now! I'd better not mess this up with bad quilting..
I like that idea Marg! Had not thought of that before...pondering on it now. Thanks :-)

Hurray - you got an explore, I knew you would - I don't have to eat my hat. Although I have to say I didn't anticipate you'd get plaudits from the fabric designer - that is a stage or two beyond explore!

    22. rafael's mum (32 months ago | reply)

what's an explore? I understand the visit from the Queen :-) Well done you !!

    23. {Leila} Where Orchids Grow (32 months ago | reply)

I know!!! Will you jump up and down with me from excitement?!!!
oh yeah!!! the queen she came and saw and commented twice :-DDD, come jump up and down with Lynne and me lol
Explore I had no idea about either untill I got a photo explored. On your flickr home page at the bottom there's a feature called explore. 'They' (the flickr people) pick lots of photo's each day that caught their attention.

    24. Lynne @ Lilys Quilts (32 months ago | reply)

totally jumping up and down with you. When you say you got "a" photo explored...yours are constantly getting explored, Mrs explorer, Laurie's friend!

    25. {Leila} Where Orchids Grow (32 months ago | reply)

      you're too funny Lynne!
'only' 4 (greatly appreciated) explored I'm pretty sure you're the one and only Mrs Explore. But then I'm bff's with Laurie so it's all good! (Still jumping up and down)

    26. rafael's mum (32 months ago | reply)

thanks for explaining that. I had no idea about explore... must go and look at that homepage more closely. Almost never go there!

    27. {Leila} Where Orchids Grow (32 months ago | reply)

no problem! I had to ask someone myself so I'm just passing on what I've heard :-P

I have an idea for quilting this, not going to reveal too much yet but I'm drawing on the design now along with basting the quilt. It's going to be hand quilted... pics will follow as soon as I have some progress to share!
