Soon, I will fly away....

    This was drawn especially for my Grandfather when he was pretty poorly and very much on my mind.

    May you live every day of your life."
    -Jonathan Swift

    Updated: My Grandfather ...now 96 ... he made it! 22 May, 2005.
    Further update - he died today 20th October 2005. The bird has flown.
    In Memoriam - My Grandfather, 96

    "At the mid hour of night, when stars are weeping,
    I fly the lone vale we loved, when life shone warm in thine eye;
    And I think oft, if spirits can steal from the regions of air,
    To revisit past scenes of delight, thou wilt come to me there,
    And tell me our love is remembered, even in the sky.

    Then I sing the wild song ’twas once such pleasure to hear
    When our voices commingling breathed, like one, on the ear;
    And, as Echo far off through the vale my sad orison rolls,
    I think, oh, my love! ’tis thy voice from the Kingdom of Souls,
    Faintly answering still the notes that once were so dear."

      glenfinlas, what a lovely thought.

      Papa is frail and failing but his mind is sharp as ever. We thought the end was nearing last week yet somehow he has rallied a little once more.
      He has such tremendous spirit. Two years ago, at 93 and with cataracts and sciatica, he took himself over the 'Flying Fox' ride at Blairdrummond Safari Park - to the amazement and (I have to say) horror of my mother and I.
      For anyone who doesn't know this, it is a ride on a rope pulley that goes over the boating lake.

      He won't be around much longer but we are so grateful to have had the privilege of having hiim in our lives for so long.

      Thank you both for the comments.

      Oh what a pile of thanks I should have given to all those who commented. So thank you, each of you, now...... Your comments on this mean a great deal.

      Honest .... you made me look again ... and read the poetry again. I hadn't read it since he died. I chose Thomas Moore's words before he died ... and reading them again now brought a tear to my eye. Sometimes that is a good thing too. The poem is probably meant for a partner rather than a Grandfather, but he was very special and I loved him dearly so many of the words are just right.

      Hi Lynn,
      This poem and your picture touches me deeply. It is so hard to lose someone we care about so deeply. My soul mate and husband past away eight years ago and I still wander in those memories of rapture with him. Our loved ones stretch our hearts even from beyond because look how your art touches us all.
