Ohio Second Empire 1
I found this incredible house around Thanksgiving of 1988. I think it is somewhere in North-Central Ohio, possibly near Fremont(?) If anyone knows where it is or if it still exists, please let me know. It looked like someone was planning to do work on it.
UPDATE: Four out of five Buckeyes agree, it burned down. I wonder if there are any left like this? (Mudhouse mansion, I guess)

This is an amazing house.
It was uncommon to build this style out in the country
If it still sat abandoned,it'd most likely be famous.
I hope it has been restored and not demolished since the 80's

Wow, this would make a great movie location... It's written before, but when I saw it for the first time I couldn't help thinking of "Psycho"...

I think that the second empire style has become the ultimate cliche for a haunted house. They seem much more to have found their final identity there and it makes me wonder how people felt about them when they were brand new. I know of numerous examples that have been restored and they never look as appropriate to the style as something like this place in all it's decayed glory. Sad thing is, as we are coming to see, their lifespan is limited when left to rot.

Woah.....outstanding...I do hope someone comes along and IDs it for us.
Can you send this to the county historical society? Someone must know this beauty...
Equinox27 (57 months ago | reply)
I will try to do that Blackdoll, and maybe even stop in Fremont on my next trip through there. There has to be some information on it as it is so distinctive. I think there is a historical association in Fremont, if, indeed, that is where it is (was) located.

giosmarta, Yeah, that's the kind of place it was. I remember watching the Addams family regularly as a kid, haven't heard that song in a long time! And brought to you by Crest Toothpaste, no less.

I'd move there. ;) Great of you to post a capture of something that no longer exists! I love this style of architecture. I'd love to buy mudhouse mansion, even with the ridiculous amounts of work it needs.

I spent about 15 years growing up right across state st. (SR 20) in Fremont Ohio from this house. It was always known to us kids as "the haunted house" and we would go explore the pitch black inside. Its surreal to see this place online so many years later.

pjreineck, Thanks so much for sharing your experience with the old place. I can only imagine what an impact growing up next to this place would have on the mind of a child!

Yes, there are a few still around like this. There is a house just like Mudhouse Mansion in Newark, except it's not dilapidated, it's actually inhabited and still very nice. I'm glad they're not all gone! Great shot.
Equinox27 (47 months ago | reply)
Tom, do you have a picture of the one in Newark? I would love to see it!

I also grew up in Fremont. This house was used by the local JC's for years as a Haunted House. I would go there every year just to see the house and walk through it. (Yes, the Haunted House was actually inside this amazing house). In the later years the 2nd floor was too dangerous, so they only used the 1st floor and basement.
Even when I didn't care about the silly people in costumes I would go just to look at the house.
The owner was going to restore it, supposedly. There was even a story on one of the Toledo television stations about the restoration.
Unfortunately it burned to the ground. There is nothing there now. I can't remember exactly when, but I was sad to hear it. I always thought if I ever won the lottery I'd buy it and have it restored. Now I guess if I ever win the lottery I'll just have to re-create it instead.
I used to have some old (bad) snapshots of it, but lost them years ago. Thanks so much for the posting! Now I've got some pictures of my old dream house!
Equinox27 (45 months ago | reply)
FanOfNuge,
Thanks so much for sharing your memories. Interesting that you mention recreating it if you would win the lottery. I have thought that several times and wondered how much it would cost to replicate every detail in the original materials. You would have to win the lottery for sure!
I still wonder if the local historical society has any pictures or background.

wow. I used to live less than a mile from this house when I was a kid. I remember it being my first Halloween Haunted house. My friends and I explored through the property once or twice. It's sad hat it eventually burned down.
