Detroit Society of Arts and Crafts, 47 Watson St

Detroit Society of Arts and Crafts, 47 Watson St

Founded in 1906 as part of a larger network of Arts and Crafts societies in other cities. Ten years later it was the first to have it's own building. In the Sixties the building was sold to a fraternal order that intended to build apartments here. I believe the building has now been torn down. Below is the original; for more information see here:

I thought it was odd that the building had such a prominently placed fire escape right in front.

Watson & Woodward, Brush Park, Detroit - April, 2002

Watson & Woodward, Brush Park, Detroit - April, 2002

This is right on Woodward so it's the very edge of Brush Park. I do believe this location still had some glorious Victorian mansions around the turn of the century. This building replaced them when Detroit was still in it's feverish growth phase. You can see it on the Bing map below and right behind it is the Arts & Crafts building, which is now gone, as is most of the block.

I have another shot of this which shows a tree growing out of one of the windows on the second floor.

Eliot Street Restoration, Brush Park, Detroit

Eliot Street Restoration, Brush Park, Detroit

Here are several angles on this house that has gotten totally surrounded by development in Brush Park, Detroit. For those of us that are enthusiastic about the crumbling remains of Brush Park, this is one that is easy to miss. I have included the Bing map to show where it is located. Though no longer in a residential context, it appears to maintain most of it's features, The style seems more Edwardian than Victorian. I welcome any commentary, history or known uses for this house!

My favorite features on this house are the oval window, the slate on the gable and those cool little finials. Well, I guess I just like the whole thing.

Edge of Brush Park overview

Edge of Brush Park overview

It appears that Eliot Street used to go through here but was reconfigured to allow for new development. Checks the notes to see the house below and others that will be listed including Patterson Terrace.
