on the road - II
This negative was scanned using two different methods. "on the
road - 1" one starts with just laying the negative down on the
flatbed scanner with no light shining through at all. The scratches,
fingerprints, and surface wear are very evident (to me, they are like
the sound of an old 78rpm record, the scratches and mic quality
defines the context).

Some weeks later, I discovered that (though I don't have a negative holder for this size film) I can lay the negative in a sweet spot on my scanner flatbed, configure for color negative scan, and reveal this almost prisitne (though not full width) image.
I'm fond of both versions... vive la difference!

It is a striking difference. This one looks like it could have been taken yesterday, and the other really shows it's age, I like them both. You can submit them both to Swimming in light.

Great shot. Interesting process.

Good for you for experimenting! I think I prefer this one. The car is so crisp.
There is such a trend toward 'faux vintage' images these days. But a photo like this is more like a window into the past -- as if it was a real moment that existed in time. Damaged images, or 'vintage images' seem more like objects -- something material that exists now, in the present. The subject matter seems secondary.

@ Bird Eye - thanks, will do!
@ gerard yates - thank you
@ kagogo - thank you for articulating the difference so well.. I agree, this is a clear window to a distinct moment in time, and the other is an object of itself. The textures do, for me, become a manifestation of layers of memory, and the way the past alters over time... but it is still as seen from the present moment. In this particular negative I'm just so delighted to have both versions (usually, it's just the deteriorated version by default)

WOW That is an incredible difference! I'm so glad you discovered the "sweet spot" :)

@ Infinity Rain - thanks... I keep going back to it for the shadow of the side view mirror on the road - so fine, and clear... (wish I knew what kind of camera Nanny used)

Wow. I'm so grateful you posted both--what an interesting "lesson" and two great photos. I can't decide between them.

Seen on your photo stream. (?)

@ l aurens - both, both! :-D... I've been working on a side-by-side version, but difficult as this one is so much narrower, maybe soon... thanks so much for your comment

Oh yes, I'd love to see a side-by-side... I'm sure there's some way to accomlish it.

I think this might have been before Kerouac's time! :-)
