Dragon's Teeth Sunset

Dragon's Teeth Sunset

The small area along Maui's northwestern shore known as Dragon's Teeth is really cool. It provides a sharp contrast to the mostly black and jagged volcanic rocks on other parts of the island. Sunset looked like it would be a bust for the longest time but in the end a few clouds lit up nicely for a few minutes, sending me scrambling to return to a previously scouted rock formation.

This area looks more like something you'd expect to find in the Southwest than on Hawaii.

Secret Sunset

Secret Sunset

This was the best sunset during our Maui trip. We had gone to this tiny cove the night before, but it was a Sunday night and there were four weddings going on at once. It was really crowded and kind of ridiculous. One of the names for this spot is Secret Beach which is clearly meant in irony. I came back on Monday night because surely I would have the beach to myself. Who in their right mind would get married on a Monday? Well, there were still two married couples plus their photographers there on Monday but I think they were cheating and just getting pictures taken. Fortunately they left with their photographers before the best light started. I guess you don't want the sky to steal the show in your wedding photos.

Grotto

Grotto

Wai'anapanapa State Park -- near the end of the road to Hana -- was one of the highlights of our trip. I didn't have nearly enough time to explore the park properly but I did have time to take a swim and photograph in this water-filled cave that has a subterranean connection to the ocean. I didn't have my swim trunks on but the water looked so refreshing that I jumped in anyways.

Thank goodness for my tall tripod legs. I was standing in chest-deep water for this image, the tripod 90% submerged. An onlooker from above asked: "How expensive is that camera?" "To expensive to drop it in the water." was my reply. All my equipment lived to see another day.
