Below-ground septic tank

Septic tanks are common in many rural and coastal communities with no access to a public sewer system. Septic tanks can leach as much as 14 kg (32 lbs) of nitrogen per year into groundwater or nearby surface waters. In some coastal communities like Cape Cod (Massachusettes), septic taks are the primary source of nutrient pollution.
